Subject: Time: 10:42 AM OFFICE MEMO News Advisory: Your University Date: 12/4/97 To: PIOs of CMS and ATLAS Member Universities From: Judy Jackson, Fermilab Public Affairs director Subject: Upcoming news event featuring your university Physicists from your university are members of one of the scientific collaborations that are helping to build two giant particle detectors for a new high-energy particle accelerator now being built at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory, in Geneva, Switzerland. On December 8, officials of the U.S. government and CERN will reach an important milestone in this groundbreaking project. On that day, in Washington, they will sign the agreements that make possible the participation of U.S. scientists, including those from your university, in this project. When the new CERN accelerator, the LHC, begins operating in about 2005, it will be the most powerful particle accelerator in the world. It will represent the discovery frontier in the field of high-energy physics. Physicists from your university will use it to do experiments. This signing will mark an historic moment in the world of high energy physics. It will be important to physicists at your university, and you may want to inform the media in your area of your university's role. The Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation, with logistical help from Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, have prepared background materials on the December 8 signing and its significance. On or just before December 8, DOE will issue a press release. We want to make sure that you receive these materials. Background materials are enclosed. If you have trouble reading them, or would like a fax version, please email luann@fnal.gov To be sure that the appropriate people at your university and in your office receive the background information and the press release, please send email to luann@fnal.gov Your message should include the name, university, phone number, FAX number, and email address of those who should receive the material.
